About the Author

Bradford F. Lewis, Ph.D. is Executive Director of Sankoré Institute, a non-profit science and education research organization. He earned a dual bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from Gannon University, a doctoral degree in science education from Florida State University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He has held professorships in science education at both the University of Pittsburgh and Morgan State University; and has taught science and education courses at several other community colleges, colleges and universities.

Dr. Lewis conducts research on students’ interest in science and science-related careers. Specifically, his work includes: explorations of students’ worldview and student-teacher interactions as factors influencing career attainment. The findings of Dr. Lewis’ research can be found in over 25 manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals, popular venues and presented at national and international conferences. This research has also afforded him the opportunity to work with thousands of students, teachers, and parents varying widely in age, ability level and economic background. Dr. Lewis has also received several invitations to present his research and ideas on education, both here in the United States and internationally, including places such as India and South Africa. Dr. Lewis is a 2003 recipient of the Outstanding Junior Scholar Award; and a 2003 recipient of the US Early Career Researcher Award.

Dr. Lewis has been invited to serve on the boards of three nonprofit associations. He maintains active membership in five international and national professional associations including: the American Educational Research Association (AERA - the world’s largest educational research association), and the National Association of Research in Science Teaching (NARST - the world’s largest science education research association). As a member of NARST, he has served on the Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST) Award Committee. The function of this committee is to identify and acknowledge the journal’s best article in a given year. He has served as an invited panel reviewer for three National Science Foundation grant programs. He has also reviewed article submissions for three educational research journals including: American Educational Research Journal, Science Education, and Journal of Research in Science Teaching. Science Education and Journal of Research in Science Teaching are consistently ranked in the top ten of all educational research journals and American Educational Research Journal is one of the most widely read of all educational research journals. Dr. Lewis has one son and resides in Cleveland, Ohio with his family.
